DIY Halloween project #2

For this DIY I wanted to use some of those baby jars I said I was collecting. (seriously there are tons!) I grabbed a couple of things from my kitchen:added water to the jars and one drop of food coloring. The Julia sneaked in a couple of extra drops but I recommend only one, other wise the liquid is too dark to see whats inside.
next I cut up the veggies and fruit and let them float in the green water.
I added tags to some of the jars to label what they are suppose to be. the carrots look like fingers, corn is teeth, the green pepper is an ear and the slice of kiwi is suppose to be an eye but it floats at a funny angle and didn't turn out right . O-WELL!

halloween decoration week!

Since Halloween is the first holiday in our new house I couldn't wait to decorate. I know what your thinking, Halloween is a month and a half away! I'm just excited! so I thought I would share with you some DIY Halloween decorations this week everyday will be a new one!

for the first spooky decor you will need two colors of felt for stocking and a piece of black felt for boots. a sewing machine and scissors. that's it!!
I cut out the boots easiest way to do that was to fold the felt in half and then cut.

next I made rows of the different color felts. I hate measuring and I figured witches aren't perfect so my rows are not perfect :)
then I sewed the rows together

next I sewed on the boots:

I just used duck tape to stick the legs onto the inside of our fireplace. what a great way to start getting your house in the Halloween spirit.

meeting baby Julie

This is the maternity ward at the St. Jerome Cove center's medical clinc. there have been over 200 babies born right on that bed! The tradition for the Ugandan mothers is to take their placentas and burn them. This is supposed to be good luck for future pregnancies. this is the incinerator right outside the clinic.

one night while we were entering into the dinning room to eat i notice that the light was on in the maternity ward room. I can honestly say i was jumping up and down "Richard!" (one of the amazing employees at the center.) "is there a baby in there?!" Richard always laughed as us. i can only imagin what he thought about us crazy americans. "Yes." "Richard please see if it's ok if we can go see the baby be born!!!!" "it is ok." I dont think i could have ran faster. i prayed that god would let us see a baby while we were visiting. i opened the door and there sat the proud daddy looking at his new born baby girl. we passed her around and asked so many questions. looking back i think this would never have happened if we were in America. but the new father was just as excited for us to see her as we were. he told us his wife was taking care of the placenta and she would be right back. can you imagine?! giving birth with no drugs and then getting right up to walk outside and burn your placenta?! anyway he told us the baby did not have aname yet. My dear friend Julie shouted "my name is Julie!" dad said "I like it."

The two Julies

proud papa and baby Julie
I remember telling her that she was the answer to my prayers. The next day I woke up and made my bed. folding up the baby blanket i had brought with me that belonged to my baby Belle. i almost felt silly for bringing it. i wanted to smell it at night and remember her. I'm a grown women and this little baby girl is wearing blue she needs something pink! so i walked over and handed the new parents miss Belle's blanket. they thanked me but they didn't seem as excited as last night. "did you get much sleep?" i asked
"no, my milk has not came in yet and she has not been able to eat anything."
"what can you do?"
"she needs to eat." the father said about his wife "so that her milk supply can produce."
this broke my heart. i was able to breast feed my daughte rfor 8 months and had no problems. Belle latched perfect my supply was great i never had soreness or cracks. Belle was healthy and gained alot of wieght. i couldn't understand why god had made it so easy for me when i had a million other options. These parents didn't have a Walmart down the street with a baby section full o ffeeding options for their starving newborn. I walked back to my group in tears everyone listened to the reason i was so upset and we got together a huge pile of our breakfast and walked back over to baby Julie's mom and gave her the food. soon after her milk came in and mom and baby were doing great and were released to go home. Baby Julie is forever in my heart and will always be my proof that God answers prayers.

new shoes

This picture just warms my heart. One of the first things we noticed after arriving at St. Jerome Cove center was that most of the children didn't own shoes or the shoes they did own were falling apart. we spent the first night in tears over the fact that our children have three or four pairs of shoes just sitting in their closets. We begged Father Hillary to let us go ahead and pass out the shoes we brought with us in one of our suitcases. he laughed at us and shook his head. the kids stood patiently in line. there was no pushing, or fighting. these children stood in single file line waiting for their turn to get their feet fitted for new shoes.
old and new
they were so thankful. This is father Tom teaching the children high fives.
a big lesson we learned while trying on the shoes is that even though we had tons of shoes donated we had only certain sizes and there were not enough to fit every child. we were so upset to have to tell those children that they would not be getting shoes that day. they seemed broken hearted and that just killed us. Father Hilary told us not to worry. it would be like if you have twins and one child got something for their birthday and the other didn't. it's not fair but it's a lesson the children have to learn. they should be happy for the children that got new shoes and trust that god with let them have their day. (see why i love him!)

I have my heart set on going back to uganda in two years, this time with my husband. I started collecting shoes, toys and clothes to take with me. if anyone is interested in donating these things please email me or message me through facebook.

DIY centerpiece

I guess it's the crafter in me but I just can't seem to talk myself into throwing away glass jars. so I save the empty spaghetti sauce and baby food jars. They have their own little cabinet in the kitchen. my husband asked me the other day "Do you actually have a plan for these?"
well the answer is of course I do!
here is one:

I took 4 jars and taped around the outside .Spray paint them white: (I just noticed I had my wedding rings on bad idea!)
found this old milk carrier in our basement! that made my day!
removed the tape:

place flowers into jars filled with water. organize them into the carrier and set in the middle of the table.

is it perfect? NO, don't you know me by now?!?
do I like it? LOVE IT!
